Correspondences, by Yechel Gagnon and Alexandre Masino, confronts us with the twofold challenge of seeing both distances and proximities between the works of each artist. While skeptics may be surprised at this particular pairing of artists, they will likely be even more surprised, as well as confounded, by the experience that awaits them: they will be gently struck by the wealth and depth of the dialogues that take shape between two bodies of work that, on the surface, have so little in common. Stepping into this shared space is not the same as entering each artist’s studio in turn: rather, it is seeing each artist enter the other’s studio every day and enliven it with his or her individual presence; it is observing their daily to-and-fro in the stairway that runs between them. A stairway – an empty space, a passageway, never a destination – through which pass concepts, intentions and determinations; a stairway the artists each take – confident, hesitant, eager – to their own place or to the other artist’s place; a stairway between two places the same, yet different.

Si le duo d’artistes lui-même peut étonner le sceptique, l’expérience vécue devrait l’étonner davantage en le confondant : il sera doucement happé par la richesse des dialogues qui s’engagent entre deux œuvres qui ont, en apparence, si peu en commun. Pénétrer dans cet espace partagé, ce n’est pas entrer tour à tour dans l’atelier de chacun des artistes, c’est voir chacun des artistes entrer quotidiennement dans l’atelier de l’autre et l’animer de sa singulière présence; c’est assister à leur va-et-vient quotidien dans l’escalier les reliant. Un escalier – espace vide, lieu de passage, jamais destination – où transitent les concepts, les intentions et les déterminations; un escalier que l’on emprunte – confiant, hésitant, empressé – vers chez-soi ou vers l’autre; un escalier entre deux lieux mêmes et autres.
