English as a Second Language – Level 1 (In person)
Prerequisite: Beginner Level
Overall Goals:
- Introduce the students, who have prior knowledge of English basics, to the vocabulary, grammatical rules, and functions necessary for dealing with familiar everyday situations including introducing oneself or others to a group, accepting or declining invitations, discussing family relations, communicating in a restaurant, and discussing problems in appliances and devices.
- Provide students with various communicative activities for developing their listening, speaking and reading skills, and thus, enable them to communicate effectively in familiar and unfamiliar everyday situations.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify, describe, and introduce someone to a group.
- Make plans and accept or decline invitations to attend entertainment and cultural events.
- Identify locations and give directions to reach specific destinations.
- Report news about family relationships and identify similarities and differences.
- Ask for restaurant recommendations, order from a menu, and pay for a meal.
- Describe healthy and unhealthy food.
- Recommend a brand or a model and describe product features.
- Complain about problems in household devices and appliances.
- Express sympathy for others’ problems.
- Write a short paragraph describing someone, comparing two family members, or reviewing a product.
Methodology:
- Vocabulary activities (flashcards, matching, crosswords, etc.)
- Modelling and practising conversations
- Pronunciation activities
- Pair and group discussions
- Listening activities (listening for gist, for specific information, and for details)
- Reading activities (skimming and scanning tasks)
- Grammar activities and games
