DAWSCON at Dawson College | January 14, 2022

Dawson College will again be hosting its free one-day software conference in Montreal. This conference is bringing speakers from around the world to speak to students and developers on a wide range of topics concerning software development. You chose to be a programmer and one of the commitments this entails is to lifelong learning. DawsCon is the ideal place to start or continue!

The event is free to attend and targeted at students, professional software developers and anyone with a general curiosity.

Bessam Abdulrazak

Professor at the University of Sherbrooke

Bessam is a professor of computer science at the Université de Sherbrooke and the director of the AMI-Lab (an interdisciplinary laboratory on ambient intelligence for active aging). He is also an active researcher at the Research center on Aging (CdRV) and at the Interdisciplinary Institute for Technological Innovation (3IT). His research interests include ubiquitous and pervasive computing, Ambient Intelligence, Smart Environments, Assistive Living Technologies, context-awareness and software engineering. He has over 180 peer-reviewed publications, served as general chair for a number of conferences and workshops, serves on the editorial board of numerous international journals, as well as program committee of several conferences related to his research interests. Senior Research Engineer at Google

Dr. Nithum Thain is a Senior Research Engineer for Google. Dr Thain holds numerous degrees in Mathematics from Queen’s University (BSc) and McGill (MSc, PhD), along with an MBA from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Simon Fraser University, where he worked on cutting-edge algorithms to quickly classify tuberculosis strains using minimal genetic data. He subsequently joined Jigsaw a unit within Google that explores threats to open societies, and builds technology that inspires scalable solutions. There, he did research on using natural language processing techniques in machine learning to help tackle online abuse. At Google Brain, he has worked on issues of AI Responsibility and Fairness. He has also taught Natural Language Processing with Deep Learning at the UC Berkeley School of Information and has advised numerous start-up companies on machine learning and data science approaches to assist with business decision-making and analytics. Thain is a frequent contributor to the field of Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, and Game Theory, authoring numerous articles, including proceedings in the International Conference on World Wide Web and the Association for Computing Machinery Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society.

Froduald Kabanza is Chief Technical Advisor at Menya. In 2006, he founded Menya, an AI Service company, which would later become Levio's AI division in 2019 and would keep growing. Hugo Larochelle is a Research Scientist at Google Brain and lead of the Montreal Google Brain team. He is also a member of Yoshua Bengio's Mila and an Adjunct Professor at the Université de Montréal. Previously, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Sherbrooke. Larochelle also co-founded Whetlab, which was acquired in 2015 by Twitter, where he then worked as a Research Scientist in the Twitter Cortex group. From 2009 to 2011, he was also a member of the machine learning group at the University of Toronto, as a postdoctoral fellow under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton. He obtained his Ph.D. at the Université de Montréal, under the supervision of Yoshua Bengio. Finally, he has a popular online course on deep learning and neural networks, freely accessible on YouTube.

Ken recently retired from the Computer Science Technology program at Dawson College after 31 years and served as department chair for 25 of those years. Currently he is a Research Scholar in Residence at Dawson. He is a Java Champion and a member of the Java Community Process Executive committee.
