Course Description: This course introduces the student to the organizational structure of the College, the program and the health care system as a whole. The function and professional responsibilities of the technologist are explained in the context of all the regulatory bodies that govern the profession. The student is introduced to some essential information on the nature of radiation, radiation protection and basic principles in the management of medical imaging information. | |||||||||

Course Description: This course aims to provide the students with the essential anatomical references, surface landmarks, skeletal anatomy, and anatomical and radiological terminology used in medical imaging. The skeletal anatomy of the human body is described in detail from a three-dimensional perspective. Differentiation between radiographic projection, position, and view is demonstrated. The students evaluate the displacement and spatial relationships of anatomical structures in relation to movements of the body and the X-ray source. Radiographic image analysis is also introduced as the students identify key anatomical structures of the various regions of the skeletal system on basic images. | |||||||||

Course Description: This course teaches the fundamental physics underpinning diagnostic imaging. The focus is on radiation physics: fundamental particles interacting with matter, photons interacting with matter, as well as a phenomenological understanding of electrodynamics as pertaining to the x-ray tube and image production. This is followed by an introduction to magnetism and quantum mechanics as they pertain to magnetic resonance, and magnetic resonance imaging. Course Description: The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to human anatomy and physiology to students in the Diagnostic Imaging program. The emphasis will be on the concept of homeostasis and the role the various organ systems play in the maintenance of homeostasis. The anatomical positions of organs for imaging purposes will also be emphasized. Organ systems that are the focus of the course include: nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive. | |||||||||

Students will prepare to perform the examination by evaluating the patient’s body habitus and selecting the technical parameters. Students will learn how to execute the examination using radiographic and accessory equipment, as well as how to evaluate the radiographic images and post processing techniques. This will involve the identification and description of the radiographic anatomy and various pathologies related to the upper appendicular skeleton. They will become versed in applying the pharmacology of drugs and contrast agents used in medical imaging. Students will learn to calculate drug dosage, and documentation protocol of administrated medication, as well as the legal, ethical, and safety principles of drug administration. This course will also introduce students to the delivery of care in emergency situations. Simulation labs will complement theoretical concepts provided in the classroom setting. The student will enhance their communication skills and professional approach as healthcare team members. Course Description: In this course, the student will develop an understanding of CT scan hardware components and basic software applications in order to create cross-sectional images of the human body. The student will learn how to identify cross sectional anatomy of the brain, spine, and extremities and identify which pathologies of these anatomical areas require CT scan imaging. The student will be able to analyze the images for diagnostic quality and adapt imaging parameters to the patient and the pathology. This course will prepare the student to administer patient care throughout the examination and work in a multidisciplinary team. Course Description: Magnetic Resonance Imaging 1 will introduce the students to the fundamental technical principles and methodology of MRI. Magnetic Resonance (MR) systems, physical principles, instrumentation, and coil technology will be analyzed in terms of bio-effects and exam optimization. Operator-controlled parameters, pulse sequences, and examination protocols in the clinical environment will be examined. Brain and spine cross-sectional anatomy images, pathology, and applications will be emphasized. Properties of the gadolinium-based contrast agent will be described. The importance of patient screening and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) safety will also be introduced. The student will successfully demonstrate by simulation routine MRI brain and vertebral column applications and procedures. | |||||||||

Course Description: This course focuses on the theory required to perform basic imaging procedures of the spine, bony thorax, and chest radiography. This course provides the students with an opportunity to practice skills required to perform basic imaging procedures of the spine, bony thorax, and chest. The course also familiarizes students with related aspects of patient care and imaging criteria. Emphasis is placed on routine positioning as well as an introduction to problem-solving for atypical patients and their specific physical, emotional, and psychological needs. The student will also become familiar with the pathological process and identify pathologies of the spine, bony thorax, and chest on images. | |||||||||

Course Description: In this 45-hour course, students integrate previously acquired concepts of radiation physics and human biology with their study of the biological effects and methods of measurement of ionizing radiation to gain an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles of radiation protection in diagnostic radiology. The international, federal, provincial, institutional, and professional responsibilities toward diligent radiation safety practices and their impact on the patient, general public, co-workers, and themselves as future technologists are emphasized throughout the course. The knowledge and abilities acquired from this course, as well as those acquired from other courses in the program, allow students to advocate for and apply effective radiation safety measures in the laboratory and clinical environments. | |||||||||

Course Description: Students explore Radioscopy, Mammography, Mobile Radiography, as well as Bone Mineral Density. Mammography: Students will gain an understanding of the equipment, positioning, and procedures needed to perform mammograms. The students will learn to provide care for the patients, look for signs of diseases such as lesions, lumps, calcifications, cysts, and more. The role of quality assurance in this modality will be explored. Mobile: Students will learn how to perform radiographic/radioscopic procedures in the operating room, emergency room, and other areas of the hospital on adult and pediatric patients. BMD: Students will learn positioning, clinical applications, interpretation of results, clinical procedures, safety, quality assurance, and operation of bone densitometry equipment on adult and pediatric patients. | |||||||||

Course Description: The Computed Tomography 2 course continues with imaging of the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis. In this course, the student will identify cross-sectional images, anatomy, and pathologies of these anatomical areas. The student will analyze the cross-sectional images for diagnostic quality and adapt imaging parameters to the patient and the pathology. The patient examinations covered include acute care, trauma exams, and the patient care skills that are required for these cases. The student will develop skills to assist the radiologist with interventional procedures performed in CT. Also, the student will develop advanced CT Scan imaging skills such as multiplanar reformatting, virtual and 3D imaging. Course Description: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 2 will integrate the concepts and skills acquired in MRI 1 with advanced imaging procedures, methodology, quality control, and post-processing techniques as seen in professional practice. MRI safety will be thoroughly examined as well as artifacts and the mechanisms used to eliminate them. Quality assurance tests for an effective QC program will be discussed. MRI procedures of the musculoskeletal, abdominal, and pelvic regions will be studied theoretically and demonstrated by simulation with an emphasis on cross-sectional anatomy, pathology, routine protocols, RF coil, and pulse sequence optimization. Labs are conducted as exercises in simulation and the skills of communication, organization, patient positioning, handling of equipment, and in applying radiation safety are integrated as part of the complete examination.
