Free Webinar: How to flip your class online when the world is flipping out

Free Webinar from Eric Mazur, Harvard Professor and Co-founder, Perusall:

Like many of us, I have had to transition fast to teaching online because of the coronavirus pandemic. This sudden move to online teaching has been a good opportunity for me to rethink my approach to teaching.

As you may know, I have always advocated for a highly interactive form of teaching — both inside and outside of the classroom — because I believe that students learn little from passive listening alone. Already before the current crisis, I used a flipped classroom model: Peer Instruction to facilitate active learning in the classroom, and Perusall to promote social learning outside of the classroom. I discovered that my approach to teaching is easily adapted to an online environment and have come to view the transition online not as a challenge, but as an opportunity. I already know that some of the changes I made to my course are an improvement and will survive the move back to campus.

Over the last two weeks, I have been sharing what I have been doing in a webinar called “How to flip your class online when the world is flipping out.”  In this interactive demonstration, I discuss how changing synchronous and instructor-paced activities to asynchronous and self-paced activities not only facilitates the move to online teaching, but also helps improve the quality of education.

As a Perusall user, you’ll likely be familiar with some parts of this webinar, but we’ll go beyond Perusall in the webinar — we’ll explore how to use Zoom to bring similar levels of engagement to the rest of the course as well. Please share the webinar with colleagues who may be interested in “flipped” learning and innovative teaching more generally.

The upcoming webinars are on Friday April 17 at 12 pm EDT and on Tuesday April 21 at 3 pm EDT. To register for either webinar, visit https://calendly.com/ericmazur/fliponline.
