The FJS Project: who we are
We are a diverse team of led by Anna-Liisa Aunio through the Community and College Social Innovation Grant (CCSIF). We have partnered with a variety of local and municipal organizations to address key questions and ideas related to food systems transformation. Our partners include Grand Potager in Verdun, the NDG Coalition for Food Security in NDG, the Institute for Health and Social Policy at McGill, the McGill Centre for the Convergence of Health and Economics (MCCHE), as well as other community organizations and researchers.
Our Team
Anna-Liisa Aunio, Principal Investigator: Dr. Aunio is currently the Principal Investigator for the Food Justice and Sustainability Hub at Dawson College, where she teaches sociology and environmental studies. Over the past several years, her research focuses on understanding the sociological drivers of environmental issues, particularly in relation to climate change and food systems. Her PhD focused on the role of policy network in shaping the global environmental agenda. Anna-Liisa has also worked closely with the student community and faculty in the development of rooftop gardens on campus and pedagogical material.
Hugo Martorell, Project Coordinator: Hugo is the research coordinator of the Food Justice and Sustainability Hub at Dawson College. He is an advocate, researcher and facilitator who is passionate about food security, healthy food and sustainable food systems. Since co-founding Justice alimentaire Montréal in 2013, Hugo has been exploring opportunities to create community-campus collaboration to address food provisioning and food planning issues. Hugo has completed his masters degree at Concordia University, where he studied the history of food politics, policy and planning in Montreal, and has worked with a number of organizations on food security and agro-ecology at the national level (Food Secure Canada, USC Canada, FLEdGE).
Gaelle Janvier, Community Liaison (Montreal): Gaëlle has a multidisciplinary background that combines studies in design, urban planning, and international project management. She also has extensive practical experience in sustainable food systems and urban agriculture. Her efforts have been focused on promoting innovative citizen engagement strategies in the urban projects related to local food systems. She has also been deeply involved in urban agriculture policy in Montreal. Gaëlle is the co-founder of Lande, an ambassador for Restaurant Day and in now working as head of strategic development for The Market Gardener Masterclass. She is particularly hooked on everything that has to do with food, public participation, and smart cities.
Karine Saboui, Research Assistant: Karine Saboui is the data analytics research assistant of the Food Justice and Sustainability Hub at Dawson college. Karine has completed a Masters degree in Geography in the field of geomatics at the University of Ottawa. Her research focused on applying spatial statistics and network analysis to understand walkability in the city. Karine has worked in geomatics, and land management for the Canadian Government. Currently Karine is interested in the intersection of data, spatial technologies, and issues relating to urban food access.
