World youth learn about Sustainable Happiness at Dawson

In late April, Sustainable Dawson hosted the International Youth Camp, which was in conjunction with the World Congress, organized by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) and the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP). Twenty-two students from around the world, including Dawson students, came to Dawson’s Living Campus to learn more about Sustainable Happiness and group leadership.

The objectives included further identifying their role as important choice makers and change makers, while understanding how their well-being is interconnected with the well-being of others, their community and the planet.  Activities, discussions and site visits emphasized experiential and holistic approaches to learning on themes including biodiversity, urban water management, Indigenous philosophy, sustainable consumption, climate action and leadership character.

As part of their camp experience, the students presented at the World Congress 2023, organized by Colleges and Institutes Canada. The students shared their ideas about the future of education with leaders in education. Along with CICan and the WFCP, two student representatives signed the World Congress Montreal Declaration, a global statement of sustainability, to reinforce and strengthen their commitment to building a more sustainable and equitable world. The students also played a key role in the wording of the declaration. Note that well-being for all is the goal.

Sustainability’s Chris Adam received the following note from CICan President Denise Amyot:

“On behalf of all of us at CICan, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to you both for hosting and organizing an amazing international Youth Camp at last week’s World Congress 2023, in Montreal, Quebec, which was a real ‘’life changing’’ and memorable experience for the participants.

“This year’s students were among some of the best ambassadors for promoting equity, sustainability, and humanity, and we could not have been prouder that they were a part of the Congress, and moreover, the World Congress Montreal Declaration.

“Of course, I realize that there is a tremendous team behind you that should also be commended for their leadership in this important event. I hope you will extend my appreciation and recognition for their hard work as well, including: your co-lead, Jenn de Vera, and other faculty, Brian Mader and Tiio Hemlock, as well as Sophie La Font.  And many thanks to Diane Gauvin who accepted to host the camp at your beautiful Dawson College!”
