MONTREAL (Nov. 21, 2024) Dawson College wishes to provide some information about the exceptional decision to cancel classes and close the building today, Nov. 21, 2024.

On Nov. 14, 2024, the Dawson Student Union (DSU), an accredited and legally independent body representing Dawson students, held a vote in accordance with its constitution. The result of the vote, as validated by the DSU, was in favour of joining a province-wide student movement to boycott classes on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The day following the vote, the College notified students that classes would be held as planned on Nov. 21. In the days that followed, the College received numerous calls and emails expressing concerns.

After thoroughly evaluating these concerns and reviewing all available information, the difficult decision to cancel classes and close the College was made. Memos were sent to all students and employees on Nov. 19 to inform them of the decision.

The decision was based solely on safety considerations and our responsibility to protect the well-being of our students and employees. As you may understand, Dawson reacts to issues of potential violence in ways that other institutions may not.

Dawson College looks forward to welcoming students and employees back to school on Friday, Nov. 22.
