On guard! Sword fighting class a success

The sword fighting component of the Movement course was successfully completed June 5 without incident, reported teacher Kimberley Barfuss. A total of 24 students, divided into two groups, participated in two intense three-hour days of sword fighting, plus a final day of rehearsals and performance.

Why is sword fighting so important for Theatre students? “It is a vital special skill that actors need to be able to show on their resumes if they hope to work as performers in theatre and film, but especially in the video game industry,” explained Kimberley. “Sword fighting is absolutely critical to complete this course properly because this is the only chance the students get to learn sword fighting during their three years at Dawson.”

“I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the Theatre students to you, Carmela Gumelli and Diane Gauvin for recognizing that the only possible means to properly complete the course was to do so in person and for your persistence in making it happen.

“The students diligently followed the protocols set by the College and were exceptionally disciplined and respectful in keeping themselves and others safe. From my perspective, making the necessary adjustments for health and safety, while still maintaining the level of quality instruction expected at Dawson was not an issue. If this is to be a new normal, I can attest, that it is absolutely doable.”
