Professional Theatre presents Passage

Passage by Christopher Chen follows the residents of two countries, Country X, which is occupied by Country Y, as they form unlikely friendships. The play investigates colonialism, and mysticism, and asks if friendships can be formed when there is a power imbalance or among warring factions. Inspired by the novel, “A Passage to India.” Passage is performed by second-year students and directed by Matt Enos.

Visual Arts student chosen for residency at the MMFA

Dawson Visual Arts student Rowan Michael Draper has been selected for a prestigious residency for young digital artists at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
Starting March 6, Rowan will be spending between two to four hours a week at the museum with access to a studio and the museum’s technological equipment. The residency is until June.

The Oresteia on until Feb. 11

From Feb. 1 to 11, the third-year students of the Professional Theatre Program at Dawson College will perform a contemporary adaptation of The Oresteia directed by Leslie Baker.
The Oresteia is one of our oldest surviving theatrical texts, first performed nearly 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece. It is composed of three plays which American playwright Ellen McLaughlin has adapted into a single, three-act play, rich with challenging roles for actors. The Oresteia focuses on a family trapped by a cycle of violence, as they seek revenge for their murdered loved ones. The myth of the House of Atreus continues to fascinate audiences, as it investigates the human compulsion toward violence, and the subsequent human desire for revenge. Matinees available tomorrow Feb. 9.

Dawson will be a “Cégep en spectacle” Feb. 2

Cégeps en spectacle is coming to Dawson for the first time on Thursday, Feb. 2. It will feature 20 acts and 100 per cent Dawson student talent. Of these, eight will go on to represent Dawson at the Cégeps en Spectacle Regional show on March 24 at Cégep du Vieux Montreal.
Organizer Trudy Ste-Croix of Campus Life and Leadership says “the acts are predominantly singers, a few musicians and a few dancers.”
The event is open to everyone. Tickets are $10 or $5 for those who donate nonperishable food or personal hygiene items. All proceeds and donated items will go to a local food bank.
Show time is 7 p.m. and the venue is Dawson’s 5B.16.
Tickets can be bought now through Feb. 2 in CLL 2E. 6 or at a tabling event on Tuesday, Jan. 31 in the Upper Atrium.
Macbeth on now through Nov. 26

The Professional Theatre Department is excited to present Macbeth, directed by Stefanie Buxton and performed by the third-year graduating students. This chilling tale of ambition is now on through Nov. 26.
“Shakespeare has a way of communicating with us that will never get old. The images he uses always connect to the way we feel and the actions we do,” says Nathan McDonald, who plays Macduff in the production.
“The work we did as an ensemble brings forth the idea of how people fight for and with each other. I hope people can see a bit of our essence as a group of performers,” says Jeanne Potvin who plays the third witch.
Tickets for Dawson faculty, staff and students are $5.

Art Gallery Exhibit: Biennial 15

Biennial 15 marks 30 years of Dawson Fine Arts Faculty members exhibiting their current artworks at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery. It continues this long tradition of investigating the relationship between art making and learning, as well as reflects on the history of the biennial.
All faculty—past and present—of the Fine Arts department will have images and texts in the catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition. There will also be a sound component containing faculty responses to the question of how the biennial has played a role in the pedagogical innovations of Dawson’s reputed Fine Arts Department.
Artists’ Books displayed at the Library

Come admire Natalie Olanick’s students’ Artists’ Books on display at the library. These were created as part of the Graphic Novels and Artists’ Books course from Studio Arts (Arts, Literature and Communication). In this course, students learn about the relationship between visual images and text. Students produce books in various formats as tests or dummies, and then make personal decisions about which format to use to create their own artists' book.
You can find the mini exhibit on the second floor of the library (entrance 5C.1), right in front of the Reference Desk.
