Dawson community achieved Push-Up Challenge goal

This winter the Dawson Community stepped up to the challenge of being active and supporting mental health initiatives! After 23 days, the Push-Up Challenge has concluded with the achievement of our modest community goal of 2,000 repetitions from all participants. In fact, we reached over 31 times that amount with 62,729 repetitions! We couldn’t have done it without two very dedicated teams: Sigma Nation (20,666 reps) and the Dawson Phys. Ed. Team (13,976 reps)! In addition, Dawson College raised $705 for the Canadian Mental Health Association.
Student Services and Human Resources worked together to offer participation prizes to students and staff. Prizes included gift certificates for IGA, Sports Experts, Lulu Lemon, Cage aux Sports and more! The winners are currently being contacted.
Many thanks to all the participants and organizers, especially Rhea Gurnagul who was present at the Push-Up Challenge Station almost every lunch time!
Our hope is that the Dawson community will continue to stay active and build a habit of working out regularly.

Dawson Theatre grad featured in CTV report

Dawson graduate Véronique Pierre was featured in a report by CTV Montreal last month. Véronique (Class of 1997, Professional Theatre) had been working as a yoga instructor after being disappointed by a lack of work in the entertainment industry.
During the pandemic, Véronique decided to pursue an acting career again with her friend’s encouragement. She is now quite busy and even considering writing and producing.
“I remember Véro well, great student, excellent actress,” said Kimberley Barfuss, Co-Chair of the Professional Theatre Program at Dawson.

Great attendance at IVGD playtesting event

The Independent Video Game Design program held its bimonthly indie game playtesting event on Feb. 23.
Over 100 attendees and students visited throughout the evening to playtest and provide valuable feedback on a variety of games from local developers, while getting the chance to network with the gaming community.
14 teams showcased new games in various stages of development, including IVGD alumni Étienne Robichaud Morinville, Julien Escobar Hellou, Steven Steffen, Yan-Simon Martel Lussier, as well as IVGD co-founder and teacher Osama Dorias.
The event also included games by Baobab Games, DarZal Games, Félix Gagné, Foolbox Studio, Queensguard Games, Studio Moka, Tales Mariano, Vitam Aeternam Studio, Carbon-Based Games and Kidney Bean Studio.
The next playtesting event will be Friday, April 12, from 6 - 9 PM, in 3C.1.
Honourable mentions for Dawson students at Harvard’s Model UN

Thirty-six Dawson College students travelled to Boston in mid-February to participate in Harvard National Model United Nations. The conference, one of the world's longest-running and most prestigious UN simulations, brought together over 1,200 college and university students from over 30 countries.

CRLT’s Simeon Pompey wins national golf honour

Simeon Pompey (Faculty, Community, Recreation and Leadership Training) has received national recognition for using the game of golf in a way to inspire and contribute to his community!
On Feb. 21, Simeon was named one of two recipients of the 2023 Lorie Kane Community Spirit Awards given by Golf Canada:
"Pompey earned the 2023 Lorie Kane Community Leader Award for his continuous devotion to helping others in his community through the sport of golf. Pompey has been a long-time supporter of First Tee which led him to be at the heart of the program’s success in Montréal since the launch of First Tee – Premier départ Quebec in 2021. He has also played a key role in the launch of golf programming in the Indigenous community of Kahnawake, on the south shore of Montréal."

Student wins Silver for Quebec in Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge

It is a pleasure to announce that Sohon Ye, first-year student in Enriched Science obtained the Silver Award - Quebec – Championship, Silver Award - Quebec - Grade 12 or CEGEP in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge organized by the Canadian Mathematical Society.
The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition open to any student with an interest in, and grasp of, high school math. It is the most prestigious math competition in Canada, and one of the most prestigious in the Americas. The COMC is the only way to be invited to the CMS’ free, exclusive training camps and compete internationally as part of Math Team Canada!
Sohon was invited to write the Canadian Math Olympiad this year on March 7. Andreea Panait, math teacher and Coordinator of external math competitions at Dawson since 2007, said: "It is an excellent result which is hard to obtain. In my experience of almost 20 years, we have had only one student with a similar result. We are very proud to have Sohon as one of our students in the Science program. In the coming weeks we will be preparing for the Canadian Math Olympiad."

6th annual SPACE writing competition: winners and honourable mentions

In 2023-2024, SPACE held its sixth annual writing competition. Students from all disciplines across Dawson College were invited to submit writing that offered a personal interpretation of this year’s theme, Uncertainty. The submissions were divided into three categories—prose (fiction and creative non-fiction), poetry and essay—and were judged in a blind fashion by Lois Valliant (retired Faculty, Fine Arts) and Hannah Rahimi (Faculty, English).
Entries were evaluated according to originality and depth of thought, style, arts-sciences connections and relation to the theme. The winners received gift certificates from Argo Bookstore, and the winners and honourable mentions have been published and highlighted on the SPACE website. Free Video Game Playtesting Event on Feb. 23

The Independent Video Game Design program is presenting a new edition of its bimonthly indie game playtesting event in room 3C.1 of Dawson College on Friday, Feb. 23 from 6 PM to 9 PM.
The Playtest @ IVGD event will showcase over a dozen new independent video games created by local developers including current Dawson students, graduates, IVGD faculty, and several Montreal-based indie studios.
Come celebrate the emerging talent in Montreal's continually growing game development scene by trying out the games, chatting with developers and enjoying a few snacks.

Retiree Ken Fogel speaking at the world’s largest Java conference

Retired Computer Science faculty member Ken Fogel continues to keep quite busy. In April, he is conducting an all-day workshop at the Devnexus conference in Atlanta, the largest Java conference in the world. Ken will be talking about RESTful web services.
Ken also has a Spotify podcast. With the release of the Payara podcast, Packt Publishing is offering discounts on Ken’s book Transitioning to Java.
