Influence of Dawson’s Living Campus

September 7th, 2022

Dawson’s Living Campus concept has influenced other schools and organizations to become Living Schools, Work Places and even Churches/Places of Worship.

Rev. Neil Whitehouse of Westmount Park United Church wrote a letter to the editor in the Aug. 30 issue of the Westmount Independent to congratulate Dawson on being recognized as a leader in sustainability:

“Huge congratulations to Dawson College on recognition of their tremendous work towards sustainable living (August 23, p. 19). My church is a Living Church as Dawson is a Living Campus, and we both have special ginkgo trees.”

As an architect, the best part was being involved in a design experiment. Using the active learning classrooms was a unique opportunity to test and observe the classroom environment….

CRLT students had full camp experience this year

September 7th, 2022

For the first time since 2019, students in the Community, Recreation and Leadership Training (CRLT) Program were able to have the full experience of the annual CRLT Fall Outdoor Ed Program, including sleeping over on site, campfires and archery.

This is a key five-day experience of the program and it is different for each cohort of students. This year it took place Sept. 1-5 at the Centre de Plein Air Notre-Dame-de-Fatima. The organizers are third-year students, workshop leaders and coordinators. The first-year students are the participants. Second-year students take the Environmental Leadership Experience course during the camp, which equips them to lead a Nature-based workshop.

This year, a total of 98 students participated. It is said to be the largest camp run by students for CEGEP students.

Tell me about your experience with DALC. What has been the best part?  I joined the Dawson Active Learning Community (DALC) many years ago because I thought it was a gym class for teachers. Recognition of Service … and a good time was had by all

August 24th, 2022

The large room in 3C.1 was dressed up in its finest to receive the 130 guests during the Recognition of Service reception and dinner. It was the largest gathering of its kind in Dawson history as the retirees from 2019-2022 were celebrated as were employees marking 25, 26 and 27 years of service.

The trend toward retirement truly showed itself as there were more than three times as many retirements, 101, as there were in the group marking the years of service, 33. The mood was light and convivial, and those in attendance were happy to reconnect after long absences due to campus shutdown or having taken retirement.

The last honouree to be presented with a gift and certificate was former Director General Richard Filion who retired in December 2020. He received a rousing introduction by Michael Goldwax, Chair of the Board of Governors, which was met with equally rousing remarks from Richard, who spoke of his admiration for the Dawson community, its spirit and its resolve, and to continue to fight the good fight for the benefit of our students.
