After “Rebellion” students discuss climate change at Feb. 18 panel

Five inspiring Dawson students and alumni will discuss their views and actions on the Climate Crisis at the Environmental Seminar at Dawson (virtually) on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.
The 2019 climate march was featured in an episode of David Suzuki's The Nature of Things entitled "Rebellion". The mobilization of the College was spearheaded by the Green Earth Club. Students will discuss their involvement in the march as youth activists and present their current projects.
Presentations will be followed by a Q & A. This panel is being moderated by Brian Mader and introduced by Anna-Liisa Aunio. Please watch the episode Rebellion, which is available free on CBC Gem here:

Powerful stories bring Indigenous perspectives to higher education

Storytelling is at the heart of the oral cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada. A unique project in Quebec led by Dawson College faculty uses storytelling to advance the inclusion and welcome of Indigenous cultures and students in higher education institutions.
“Our project is about changing the culture in academic institutions, underlining the need for Indigenous people to have leadership roles within these institutions and making sure that Indigenous perspectives are reflected and part of the educational experience for everyone,” explained Michelle Smith, a faculty member of Dawson’s Cinema | Communications Department and principal investigator.

Thirza Cuthand: Reclamations

When the pandemic first struck last March, curator and Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery administrator Rhonda Meier, began thinking of what could be done if life stayed completely online for the next six or more months. With online projects being the obvious solution, she leapt to program Thirza Cuthand, a Plains Cree/Scots artist whose work first intrigued her in Vancouver in 2003. At Indian Acts, a conference on indigenous performance art, a very young Cuthand presented a video candidly discussing her struggle with depression.

Information Evening is a virtual event on Feb. 3 from 6 - 8 p.m. for students considering applying to Dawson. It is the last recruitment push before the application deadline of March 1.
The spotlight is on five programs: Community, Recreation and Leadership Training; Computer Science; Industrial Design; Laboratory Technology - Analytical Chemistry; and Medical Ultrasound Technology.
Brand-new videos featuring testimonies from students, teachers and graduates will be rolled out on Dawson's social media channels in the next few days.

Students encourage teachers to use Sustainable Happiness in class at Ped Days

At Ped Days on Jan. 20, the tables were turned as students taught teachers for the first time at the annual professional development event for teachers.
Four final-year CRLT students shared Sustainable Happiness with teachers in the hopes of making students and teachers in virtual classrooms more connected, engaged and happy.

Montreal UN Conference hosted by Dawson drew 500 participants

Dawson College hosted the 7th Edition of the Montreal United Nations Conference on Nov. 20-22. This is an important Model United Nations event that welcomes delegates from both the Greater Montreal Area and abroad.

The ALC University/Jobs Fair is on this week through Friday. Faculty from local universities are invited to discuss studies in ALC related fields. This year’s Fair will take place across different days and terms. For this term, we have presentations next week from Concordia faculty: Communication Studies, Design + Computational Arts, Film Production, Film Studies, Journalism, Studio Arts and Translation.

DAWSCON is on!

DAWSCON, the free software conference at Dawson College, is on as usual this year. The fifth annual conference for students and developers will be taking place virtually on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021.
“This year, we’re going international because we can,” said organizer and Computer Science faculty member Ken Fogel. “It is really exciting having a lot of speakers. Programmers make a commitment to lifelong learning and DAWSCON is a great opportunity to continue learning.”
