North-South alumni mobilize support for Nicaraguan community

Six alumni of the North-South Studies Profile in Social Science moved into action in early November when they heard that Tuapi, Nicaragua was in the line of Hurricane Eta.

Diane Gauvin will be our new Director General

November 19th, 2020

Diane Gauvin will be the new Director General of Dawson College. On Nov. 18, following a recommendation from the Selection Committee and unanimous support from Senate, the Board of Governors appointed her to a five-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2021.

Diane has strong assets to lead a vision for Dawson College and to rally and engage the community to move forward on that vision, according to the Board of Governors.

Dawson friends of the Vice-President Elect

Trevor Williams, Head Coach of the Dawson Blues Div. 1 Women's Basketball Team, and Wanda Kagan, Manager of the Dawson Blues Div. 2 Women's Basketball Team, both knew Kamala Harris when she lived in Montreal as a teenager.

They have been interviewed about the Vice-President Elect of the United States, who will take up her new duties Jan. 20.

Three Dawson students featured as inspiring young Canadians

Dawson students Kahenientha Cross and John Nathaniel Gertler and Dawson graduate Ella Noel were featured in a CBC news report in the lead up to The Nature of Things documentary, Rebellion. Scenes of students preparing for the climate march were filmed at Dawson last year.

The 60th anniversary season premiere of The Nature of Things hosted by David Suzuki on Nov. 6 features an action-filled documentary that captures the beginnings of a movement that is changing the world.

Rebellion brings viewers to the front lines of the climate rebellion, including Dawson College on Sept. 26, 2019, the day before the historic climate march in Montreal with Greta Thunberg and 500,000 peaceful protesters.

Dawson's extraordinary vernissage season for the graduating students in six programs in Creative and Applied Arts was featured: These Dawson College students missed out on a live gallery show. So they went virtual.  

Dawson's environmental profiles in Science and Social Science as well as our Sustainability Office were featured: In a climate-anxious world, these colleges are training students to fight back 


Refugee Boulevard wins another major prize

Refugee Boulevard: Making Montreal Home After the Holocaust (refugeeboulevard.ca) has won the U.S. Oral History Association Mason Multi-Media Award. The SSHRC-funded project is the work of Dawson faculty members Nancy Rebelo and Stacey Zembrycki along with Anna Sheftel from St. Paul University and Eszter Andor from the Montreal Holocaust Museum.

The project was created in close collaboration with Holocaust survivors who settled in Montreal in the post-WWII period.

Over the summer, the team created a virtual component to accompany the audio for those who can’t experience the tour in the neighborhood. Here are the links to the virtual tour:

"It is our hope that listening to survivors share their stories in the tour will open up conversations that help validate the roles immigrants play in our past and current communities," Nancy said.
