A waste management team consisting of worms will begin working at Dawson this spring thanks to a grant from Colleges and Institutes Canada. Their task is simple: consume the organic waste we throw into our hallway sorting stations and transform it into nutrient-rich fertilizer for our gardens.

Every year, Dawson has had extraordinary students, teachers and staff who enrich our community with their projects, perseverance and passion.
This year, Dawson is recognizing individuals: student Kitenge Kayembe and faculty member Joel Trudeau for their commitment; and student Fred-Dgennie Louis for her perseverance. Dawson is also recognizing students for their great projects: Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon for the Dawson Sustainability Project in the Environment category; and students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda for The Mahsa Amini Initiative in the Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice category.
The local ceremony will be Thursday, May 4 at Dawson. Both projects are moving forward for consideration at the provincial level of Forces AVENIR. Check the next D News on May 17 for a feature on our 2023 laureates.
A true community-building event, the North-South Studies Soiree brought together over 100 attendees, including profile alumni, retired and present teachers, as well as both current and admitted-for-fall-2023 students for an evening of music, friendship, and solidarity. Congratulations to all the talented artists who created works of art over a two-hour period, and put on a fantastic live artistry show. Special thank you to radio host Donna Saker of The Beat 92.5 for auctioning off the beautiful artwork, and Dawson students Mathew Anania and Alessia Vigna for their live musical performances.
The event has raised over $11,000 which will go to support Dawson’s sustainability activities under the Living Campus fund.

What to expect: For the first time since 2019, Artists in Bloom is back! Over two dozen talented student artists in the 3D Animation and Computer Generated Imagery, Illustration and Visual Arts Programs will create new works of art over a two-hour period, which will then be auctioned off by Montreal personality Donna Saker of The Beat 92.5.
All funds raised will go to support Dawson’s sustainability activities under the Living Campus Fund. Enjoy being with the Dawson community, watch art being created, listen to live music, vote for your favourite painting, and chat with fellow art lovers. The Kids’ Corner will also be where young, budding artists (7 years old and up; limited spots available) can paint on their own canvases.
After a long career as a member of the Computer Science faculty at Dawson, Ken Fogel continues to work in his field. He has published a book entitled Transitioning to Java. The book will help non-Java developers transition from whatever language they are using now to learning Java.
Published by Packt, the book is already available on Amazon for Kindle download and the physical version will be available for purchase as of May 5, 2023. Download the book on Kindle.
Ken will also generously be donating copies of Transitioning to Java to the Dawson College library, so it will soon be available there as well.
Elidjay Ross, a third-year student in Computer Science Technology, was part of the winning team in the Advanced Category at the MariHacks hackathon held from March 31 to April 1 at Marianopolis College. The team was composed of Elidjay and two students from Vanier College, along with one student from an Ontario college, and they came together in an impromptu manner. Their winning project aimed to create a simulation of our galaxy.
Additionally, a team comprising four students in the same program won the MSU's Favorite award, and another team with four more Computer Science students won the Best Visuals award.

During the March break, 33 students from the Science and the Enriched Science Program spent a day visiting labs and research facilities at the National Research Council (NRC) and the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) in Ottawa.
Separated into three groups, students were given tours of 12 different facilities where they learned about world-class research and engineering in fields such as ocean & coastal research, flight research, metrology, nanotechnology, photonics, printable electronics, human therapeutics, and advanced non-linear optical imaging and spectroscopy. The trip was organized by Chris Whittaker (Physics) and students were accompanied by Carmen Leung (Chemistry) and Jean-François Brière (Physics). Funds for the trip came from students and the Student Success Action Plan fund.
