Indigenous students reflect on their work exhibited at Dawson’s gallery

Indigenous students at Dawson celebrated a year of land-based learning at a vernissage of their artwork and projects on May 10 at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery.

The work was created in the Learning Perspectives course of the Journeys program co-taught by Amanda Lickers and Jocelyn Parr over the last academic year of 2023-2024.

Student Zye Rashontiiostha Mayo said there were two goals for the exhibit: “sharing our artwork and sharing our voices.”

Forces Avenir Recognizes Outstanding Contributions at Dawson

On May 16, Dawson College hosted the annual Forces Avenir ceremony to honour outstanding contributions from students and faculty members. Hosted by Geoff Kloos from Student Services, the event highlighted notable achievements in various disciplines — Congratulations to all!

Following the ceremony, attendees were invited to a reception to celebrate the award recipients and their impact on the Dawson community.

Join us for Support Staff Training Day on June 19

Wednesday, June 19 will be the annual Support Staff Training Day event. The plenary speaker is Chris Adam, who will bring his unique style of team and leadership training to explore concepts of well-being for all at Dawson.

Bring your curiosity and be open to movement, because this year the program features physical activity, tours and outdoor activities, as well as practical desk based skills. We look forward to meeting participants for this event.

Architect recalls transforming the motherhouse into Dawson

David Wigglesworth was never a teacher or staff member at Dawson but he worked here for 10 years.

David was the architect who oversaw the transformation of the Motherhouse of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame into Dawson College in the 1980s. On May 16, the Westmount Historical Association invited him to tell the story of this enormous project.

Food researchers from around the world gathered at Dawson

Industrialized food production and international food supply chains significantly increase food insecurity, worsen environmental degradation, and lead to inadequate livelihoods especially for women and youth. Food systems have the potential to be multi-functional levers for change. Small-scale, Indigenous, and traditional approaches can offer needed solutions for transformation.

Last week at Dawson College, a group of food researchers from Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and other parts of Canada met each other for the first time as part of a new major international project to identify, measure, and tell the stories of regional sustainable food systems. The project is called FLOW (Food, Learning and Growing) Partnership: Seeding Sustainability Transformation.

Interprofessional Education report on the 2023-2024 Academic Year

The Interprofessional Education (IPE) team at Dawson worked hard this year to brainstorm, improve upon, and implement new learning opportunities for all students across the seven medical technology and social service programs at Dawson College.

Three students and a teacher from the IPE team made a three-minute video to explain Interprofessional Education to a general audience.

Dawson Film Festival May 24

Whether it’s filming, dancing, singing or planning, smiles are always beaming in Kim Simard and Terryll Loffler’s Integrative Activity classes. These graduating students took it upon themselves to change Media Night to the Dawson Film Festival, which is a “necessary change” according to the graduates.

Multicultural fundraising event by Social Service students May 24

Third-year Social Service students are hard at work organizing a community intervention project called Refugee Awareness for Change.

They have partnered with the Welcome Collective and have organized a multicultural fundraising event. Welcome Collective is an organization whose core mission is to mobilize Montreal’s local community to provide immediate help to the city’s most precarious refugee claimants.

This is taking place on Friday, May 24 from 5 PM -8 PM in room 5B.16. Tickets are 10$. Email corinarocioking@outlook.fr for more info and your ticket.

Women’s/Gender Studies celebration of graduates May 28

Please join us to celebrate our wonderful Women’s/Gender Studies student graduates as they prepare to embark on their next adventure.

Tuesday, May 28, 2 PM-5 PM in Oliver’s (2C.17)

Our special guest speaker is Sandra Mouafo Nouadje. She is a queer second- generation Franco-Cameroonian immigrant, writer, community organizer, and the Executive Director for Project 10, a non-for-profit and registered charity supporting 2LGBTQ+ youth between 14-25 years of age.

It means a great deal for the students to celebrate with their friends and teachers.

Illustration Vernissage is May 29

Join us at the Illustration 2024 Vernissage, an exciting showcase of 36 emerging illustrators who have honed their skills and artistic voices over the past three years. It will be held on May 29th in 3C.1 from 5:30-10PM. This year’s event, inspired by the imaginative artwork of student Juliette Lafleur-Loughrey, transports us to a whimsical world where animal and popcorn-like stylish creatures vividly represent diversity and community.

This event is open to the public and the Exhibition will continue on May 30th from 12:- 9:00 p.m and May 31st from 12:00 - 7:00 p.m. The theme of inclusivity and imagination is brought to life not only through the artwork but also through the design of the event space, including engaging signage and interactive displays.

This vernissage is not only a celebration of our students’ artistic achievements but also an homage to the careers of Pauline Fresco and Meinert Hansen, two esteemed faculty members who are retiring after years of dedication and inspiration. This event also marks their last semester, making it a particularly poignant moment for us all.

Expo 24: Visions Unveiled: the Visual Arts Graduating Exhibition May 30

The Dawson Fine Arts Department is excited to present this year’s graduating student exhibition, Expo 24: Visions Unveiled. Please join us for the opening reception and vernissage on Thursday, May 30, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM to celebrate our graduating class of 2024! 

Our awards ceremony and catalogue launch will begin at 6:00 PM in the Upper Atrium. The exhibition will remain open to the public through Thursday, June 6 and will be on display in the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery as well as the 2G corridor and in 2G.15.

3D Animation and CGI Vernissage June 5-6

Students will showcase short thesis films completed during the final year of 3D Animation and CGI. Screenings take place in the Dawson Theatre (June 5 at 7 PM and June 6 at 3 PM 5 PM, 7 PM and 9 PM) and an exhibition of art boards and showreels will be set up in 5E.16, which will also have catering. Students have been working night and day, on their own and in teams, to plan all aspects of the event while also preparing to show off their amazing talents and skills.

Interior Design Vernissage is June 6

As we embark on a new chapter, we are excited to welcome you to our 2024 Dawson College Interior Design Exhibition: a celebration of our creativity and passion for Interior Design!

The Interior Design 2024 Vernissage is Thursday, June 6 from 5 PM to 9 PM in 3C.1. The exhibition continues on Friday, June 7 from 9 AM to 4 PM in 3C.1.

The Independent Video Game Design program is proud to host its annual vernissage event, showcasing games created by our 2024 graduating class and the local independent game development community! Humanities teacher Timothy Slonosky’s new book

Civic Reformation and Religious Change in Sixteenth-Century Scottish Towns is the name of Timothy Slonosky’s new book.

The book demonstrates the crucial role of Scotland’s townspeople in the dramatic Protestant Reformation of 1560. It shows that Scottish Protestants were much more successful than their counterparts in France and the Netherlands at introducing religious change because they had the acquiescence of urban populations.

Timothy has been teaching in the Humanities department at Dawson since 2006. He graduated from Dawson’s Liberal Arts program in 1999 and went on to study history at McGill and Simon Fraser Universities. He did his PhD in Reformation history at the University of Pennsylvania.

“I started work on Civic Reformations in 2006. I was drawn to Reformation history, and religious history in general, because I’m curious about the role of religious motivations in people’s political and life choices, a topic I explore in my Humanities Worldviews class Visions, Rebellions and Elections.

Six faculty members completed Sustainable Happiness

Facilitator Holly McIntyre led a group of faculty members through the Sustainable Happiness non-credit course pioneered at Dawson. Congrats to our first SH faculty grads!

Fueling Dawson with Dawson Dinin’ three days a week

Over a decade ago, the Dawson Student Union began to address food insecurity at the College introducing Dawson Dinin’, a free vegan lunch service, offered once per week to the whole community.  In Winter 2024, the Office of Sustainability, the Dawson College Peace Centre, and the Dawson Student Union joined together to expand the service an additional two days a week. Dawson Dinin’ lunch service operated Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the Early Bird Breakfast program on Thursdays, all semester long including during the exam period.

Dawson Open House to be held October 20 and October 27

In Fall 2024, for the first time ever, Dawson’s Open House will be held over two days to provide a more positive experience to the thousands of prospective students and their families who regularly attend.

On October 20, we will invite prospective students to learn more about all programs in the Science, Medical Studies and Engineering (SMSE) sector.  Then, on October 27, all programs in the Creative and Applied Arts as well as the Social Science and Business Technologies sectors will welcome prospective students.

Also for the first time ever, although not mandatory, we will be asking attendees to sign up and provide contact information in advance of the event.  Sending advance communications with important information will help our visitors better understand the opportunities on site and plan their visit.

Dawson College offers support for current teachers and educational professionals to engage in the accredited professional development program for college teachers from the University of Sherbrooke. The Performa program encourages continuous learning directly relevant to teachers and professional roles in the college network.

The courses are held on-line and in blended learning format.

Indigenous student and grad featured in Warrior Up

Kayla Spencer-Young, who will graduate next month from Dawson’s Pure and Applied Science program, and Rotshennón:ni Two-Axe (Class of 2023, Health Science) will be featured in a TV series called Warrior Up on APTN. The series follows inspiring and activist Indigenous youth aged 15 to 26 as they face challenges and make positive changes happen in their communities and beyond. Kayla and Rotshennón:ni were chosen because they are student founders of IndigeSTEM, which also won a Forces Avenir award in 2022.

The City of Westmount is currently undertaking a Special Planning Programme (SPP) to reflect a collective vision for urban planning. This SPP will be a catalyst for revitalizing the City’s southeast, where Dawson is located.

Your ideas will influence the key orientations of this major project:

Students and staff are invited to a bike maintenance skills workshop May 28

Students and employees are welcome to bring their bikes to learn how to change a tire, adjust brakes and do basic tune up’s.

Mech Tech faculty member Adam Kingsland will lead an outdoor bike workshop by the Gazebo in Parking Lot 1 starting at 12 PM on Tuesday, May 28. (Rain date: Wednesday, May 29) Bring your bikes or simply come listen and learn. Adam facilitates the workshops by ensuring all participants can get their hands dirty to benefit from the hands-on learning.

Active transportation news and BIXI discount

There will be a meeting with those who have shown interest in joining Dawson's Active Alternative Transportation Working group (AATWG). “We plan to meet with the group to discuss future bike workshops, helping people find the best route to and from Dawson. Whether it is a biking or walking route, we want to encourage people to live healthier lives by spending more time outdoors instead of sitting in a car, bus, metro or train to get to work or school,” said Jennifer de Vera (Office of Sustainability).
