Dawson’s Well-Being for All Initiative

Starting October 1, 2024, all support staff, professionals and managers can use up to four hours of work time every month for well-being and building community. This is part of the College’s commitment to our core value of well-being for all. Faculty members are, of course, welcome to participate in any activity that takes place outside their teaching responsibilities.

Nominations & applications open for Fall Awards

Nominations and applications for Dawson's Fall Awards open today Thursday, Sept. 26 and close on Monday, Oct. 14. This is a great opportunity to recognize and encourage students.

The Awards Office is also looking for volunteers to serve on the Awards Selection Committees.

It is Support Staff Week across Quebec from Sept. 23-27. During this Semaine du personnel de soutien de l’enseignement supérieur, we thank all support staff at Dawson for the incredible contribution you make every day across all areas of the College.

Support staff at Dawson work in a vast array of jobs, from technical support to administrative work, and play important roles in the background or support students directly.

Every year the Humanities Department at Dawson College hosts the Humanities & Public Life Conference. This year, the conference is happening Monday, Oct. 21 to Friday, Oct. 25 and the theme will be aesthetics: theories of art, beauty, and performance. All events will take place at Dawson in 5B.16; exceptionally the last event on Oct. 25 will take place in 3F.43 (CoLab).

Inclusion Kits now available for your class

Starting this semester, faculty will have the opportunity to borrow inclusion kits for students to use in their classrooms. These kits contain tools students might need to help palliate a disability or limitation.

This could allow students to stay in class to complete in-class assignments, essays, quizzes, and exams where extra time is not a factor. Items in these kits can be useful to all students. Should you wish to try one in your class or if you have any questions, suggestions, comments, please contact Adriana Raimondo at araimondo@dawsoncollege.qc.ca.

Two absurdist comedies Oct. 2 through Oct. 5

Two absurdist comedies by Arthur Kopit will be performed by second-year Professional Theatre students Wednesday, Oct. 2 to Saturday, Oct. 5. Set in a 1930s mental institute, the women in Chamber Music devise a plan to thwart an attack from the men’s ward. Believing they are famous women from history, the characters raise questions about identity and self-perception in this dark comedy.

In The Day the Whores Came Out to Play Tennis, wealthy, influential men gather to socialize at their country club. When a group of women break into the club and take over the tennis court, chaos ensues, and the status quo is challenged. Directed by Matt Holland and performed by the second-year students of the Professional Theatre Program at Dawson College.

Reminder about 15-minute mandatory training

This is a reminder of the mandatory Sexual Violence Prevention Training: Systems of Oppression and Intersectionality. All employees are required to complete this 15-minute module as part of our ongoing efforts to foster a respectful workplace.

This is expected to be completed during work hours.

Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery

Indigenous student art on display until Oct. 6

This year the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery invited indigenous students Julia Clement (curator), and three artist/creators—Shayla Chloe oroho:te Etienne, Angela Ottereyes, and Tapisa Tulugak—to present works in the Upper Atrium display case for Truth and Reconciliation Week.

They shared acrylic paintings (Etienne), a linocut work on paper with a poem (Tulugak), handsewn regalia—a jingle dress, and a ribbon skirt with a poem (Ottereyes). Together, their works honour residential school survivors and their families, and create hope and beauty for the generations to come.

The showcase is located just outside the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery in the Upper Atrium and the works will be on display until Sunday, Oct. 6.

Creative Change Maker showcase in 5C corridor Oct. 1-4

The Creative Collective for Change has selected the winners for their 2nd annual Creative Change Maker Award!

Look up as you walk the 5C corridor next week (October 1-4)! The CC4C will be showcasing the diverse student art works submitted last June for its Creative Change Maker Award.

Interview with Cassia Powell

Cassia Powell (they/them) is an emerging artist + curator currently located in Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh territories. They are a BFA Visual Arts honours graduate from the University of Victoria (2020) as well as a co-founder/curator of the Dirty Dishes Collective. They have been awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Subtle Technologies Membership Program. Between their personal artistic practice and curatorial focus, their work explores comfort + care as a radical act of social resistance, with queer methodologies being at the root of all projects. Powell's visual works take on the shape of surreal, affective visual structures, depictions of quotidian rituals, and narrative-heavy portraits, using a combination of soft sculpture and large-scale oil painting. Their third solo exhibition, In Between You and Me, is on view at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery until September 28. Within the context of this exhibition, Visual Art Students and WGFAG Representatives, Olivia MacIntosh and Tristan Boisvert-Larouche were given the chance to ask Cassia about their work.

Insightful mental health information on Station SME website

We often encounter students who are in distress, but we, as staff members, don’t always know how to address them. You can find insightful mental health information on the Station SME website, which was developed as a part of the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur’s Mental Health Action Plan.

Station SME is a mental health resource divided into two sections that includes (1) mental health tools for students and (2) information for staff members on how to support student mental health. You can explore different themes, like crisis management, access toolkits and view initiatives from other higher education institutions.

Attention: brave souls of the campus!

In the shadows of past Halloweens, only offices under Student Services dispensed delights. This year, we’re unleashing a wider web of candy-filled surprises throughout the campus! The Campus Life Office invites other offices and employees to join in the fun and festivities and expand Dawson’s spooktacular trick-or-treating event.

If you dare to participate in this eerie escapade, let us know by the witching hour on Monday, October 14 by writing to ksmith@dawsoncollege.qc.ca . Your name will be added to our enchanted list but remember it is up to each department to conjure your own stash of sweets.

All students are summoned to join the festivities, but beware: only those donned in the most spectacular costumes will be granted passage to claim their sweet, sugary treasures.

Be prepared for an afternoon of frightful fun and delightful treats on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 2 PM-3:30 PM!

Theatre students shortlisted for prize

Three Dawson Professional Theatre students are finalists in Infinithéâtre’s The-Write-Stuff playwriting competition: Rachel Bruder-Wexler for her play On the Edge, Scarlett Harvey for her play Apple's Tree, and Emmanuela Idjidina for her play Micros.

The plays will be read by professional actors as part of Infinithéâtre's Park N' Play reading series on Saturday, September 28 at 2:30 PM at Parc Drolet-Rachel.

Decolonization, Well-being for all

Petition still collecting signatures for Indigenous rights

The Dawson Student Union's petition requesting that the Government of Quebec exempt Indigenous students from Law 14 is still open. At time of publication, the signature count was at 2,303.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Monday, Sept. 30 is another good opportunity to share it on social media and invite people you know to sign the petition as a concrete gesture of solidarity with Indigenous peoples in Quebec.

It is expected that the deadline may be extended to give more time to widen the mobilization and get more signatures.

Dawson Remembers, Milestones

In memoriam Graeme Welch

We regret to inform you that Graeme Welch passed away on Sept. 7. Graeme was hired by Dawson in 1983 and held a variety of roles including Dean of Social Science and Academic Dean. He retired from Dawson in 2005.

We regret to inform you of the passing of Jean-Claude Klein, a Dawson retiree. Jean-Claude taught French at Dawson from 1970 until his retirement in 2001.

Living Campus, Sustainability, Well-being for all

Four bat species added to 1,000 species count

Possibly Dawson’s first ever Bat Walk took place on Sept. 5, which led to a few more species being added to the 1,000 Species in 1,000 Days goal. The FUNmtl team, which led the activity, brought speakers that pick up the frequency of bat calls and can identify the species. Around 25 people came, including people from the external community and students. We were able to identify four species, the silver-haired bat, hoary bat, eastern red bat and big brown bat! A very exciting night for our biodiversity count! The picture shows the speaker attached to an iPad so that we could see the bat calls and know when to look up to see them.
