Dawson students and teacher shine in the Forces Avenir recognition program
The provincial Forces Avenir recognition program is back at Dawson after several years’ absence. Colleges and CEGEPs in Québec, as a group, chose not to participate until the process of nomination and selection was streamlined. For the first time in a long time, the program is back at the CEGEP level.
Dawson’s only previous recipient was Arielle Elkrief (Health Science, 2011) who went on to become a successful physician working in oncology, including time at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center conducting research.
The program recognizes students and faculty members locally and provincially in several categories, individually and for group projects. The individual categories are Committed Student and Persevering Student, and for the first time, Committed Employee. Projects may be submitted in seven different categories: Art, Literature and Culture; Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice; Entrepreneurship, Business and Social Economy; Environment; Health and Healthy Living; Science and Technology; Society, Communications and Education.
Celebration of Dawson recipients
A ceremony and reception celebrating Dawson’s Forces Avenir recipients is being held Wednesday, May 4 in 5B.16. Two Science students have been nominated and selected in the individual categories: Rotshennón:ni Two-Axe for Committed Student and Kayla Spencer-Young for Persevering Student. The two have also received a nomination for their project, IndigeSTEM. These projects and nominations have been retained for consideration in the provincial program to be revealed at a gala event in Quebec City in September.
A second project received a nomination at the local level. The Atwater Pantry Project, which received support from the Congrégation-de-Notre-Dame sisters, was profiled in D News last Fall. The article can be read here.
Simeon Pompey, a long-time faculty member in Community, Recreation and Leadership Training, was nominated and selected in the Committed Employee category. His nomination has been retained for consideration in the provincial recognition program.
This well-deserved accolade was bestowed as a result of tireless support, mentorship and encouragement of young people inside and outside the classroom through his teaching, his volunteer work and his leadership in every activity. His achievements are too numerous to mention here. A full profile of Simeon Pompey will be featured in the next edition of D News on May 18.
The interview process for selection at the provincial level can be viewed online on May 5 and May 6. The schedule and link are accessible via Facebook.
