Joel Trudeau leads Maker Education workshop Feb. 21
Maker education is an innovative framework for developing 21st century competencies. A makerspace is a place for students to be active learners, to problem solve, exercise critical thinking and learn by constructively questioning ways of doing and by being exposed to innovative technologies and practices.
The MakerSPACE project is part of an ECQ grant examining the development of these learning environments for STEM/STEAM activities. In this workshop, faculty will be exposed to maker education fundamentals and participate in a discipline-independent making activity.
We will also explore the framework for the initiation of a new (SPACE Integrated Studies) Community of Practice that invites community members to share best practices in maker education and related pedagogies across disciplines.
The workshop takes place under the umbrella of DALC (Dawson Active Learning Community) as the focus will be on the active learning dimensions central to the evidence-based grounding of maker education. A larger goal then is to contribute to the ongoing work of many others to build links and collaborations between learning initiatives at Dawson.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to: situate maker fundamentals for active learning and other pedagogies.
