New Code of Conduct promotes safe environment for entire Dawson Community
Everyone who comes to work, attends class or visits the College campus has a right to not only a safe and healthy environment, but to be treated with respect and civility.
These principles are the basis of Dawson’s new Code of Conduct Policy that will apply to the entire Dawson Community, including students, employees, as well as visitors and contractors who come to the College. The new policy will be in effect as of August 1, 2021 and replaces the current Student Code of Conduct.
How it was developed
The Code of Conduct Policy was drafted by a committee comprised of representatives from all unions and associations of the College, student representatives from the Dawson Student Union, members of Student Services, Human Resources, the Academic Sector and the Ombudsperson. It was approved by the Board of Governors on April 14, 2021.
What the policy addresses
The policy covers a wide variety of conduct issues, including harassment, cyberbullying, use of cell phones, solicitation on campus and e-cigarettes. It is complimentary to the College’s existing Policy to Stem Violence, Discrimination, Harassment and the Abuse of Power, and the Policy on Sexual Violence.
Importantly, the policy includes possible resolutions, sanctions and recourses should a violation of the Code of Conduct take place. It provides detailed steps that must be taken in the event of a violation to ensure that the rights of all parties are protected and due process takes place.
Learn more
To ensure all employees understand their rights and responsibilities with regards to the new Code of Conduct, Human Resources, in collaboration with Student Services, will host two information sessions in early June. Calendar invitations will be circulated in the near term.
New and existing students will also be informed of the new policy before it goes into effect on August 1.
