(Re)introduction to Student Services

Share

With a new director and a variety of new staff throughout the department, the Student Services team is excited to start the 2024-2025 academic year off on the right foot. It began with Welcome Days before the first day of class, where a record 2,675 students attended to learn more about Dawson and their respective programs.

“We’ve been telling students to explore their schedules as part of Welcome Days for years, but this year they really took it to heart and the hallways were crowded before school even started,” said Caroline Blouin, Associate Director of Student Services responsible for Welcome Days.

During the first week of school, Student Service employees strategically placed themselves in high-traffic areas to guide students around the College and answer their questions. The majority were about the P-Wing but there were others about course changes, the new drop date, or how to get to the 8th floor.

Looking ahead, the department is well-positioned to support students throughout the rest of the year, but “one of the biggest challenges we face is getting the word out about all the services we have to offer,” said Max Jones, Director of Student Services.

To help address that challenge, all employees around the College are encouraged to print and keep this PDF handy: College Services for Students

Additionally, there will be a Student Services Fair held in the Lower Atrium on Sept. 25 from 11 AM-1 PM. Students will be able to speak to representatives from areas such as the Student AccessAbility Centre (SAAC), Counselling, Health Services, and more. A Mental Health Fair is also being planned for Nov. 13 before the homestretch of the semester, when anxiety for students can spike. More on that to come closer to the date.

It’s shaping up to be a busy 2024-2025 for the department. As a way to approach it, the team created and adopted the slogan “…but what if we could?” “Every year brings its own obstacles and challenges, but this year our team is committing to considering them first as opportunities.”
