White Ribbon Campaign Dec. 2-6
The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women and girls. It was formed by a group of pro-feminist men in Toronto, Ontario, in November 1991 as a response to the École Polytechnique massacre of female students in 1989. The campaign’s mission is to raise awareness about the prevalence of male violence against women, with the ribbon symbolizing the idea of men giving up their arms.”
Active in over 60 countries, the movement seeks to promote healthy relationships, gender equity, and a compassionate vision of masculinity.
Three programs will take place from Dec. 2 to 6:
- A discussion about Violence Against Women on Monday, Dec. 2 from 12 PM-1 PM facilitated by Joanne Rabbat. It is open to the entire Dawson Community and will take place in the Co-lab.
- From Dec. 2 to 5, there will be a table in the Upper Atrium where white ribbons will be given out to men who want to promote the end of gender violence.
- At the week’s end, Dec. 6, the women who were killed at the École Polytechnique will be remembered in the Upper Atrium with their pictures and a table with (battery-operated) candles and flowers.
We are looking for male employees to volunteer their time at the table in the Upper Atrium, where they can encourage male students to wear the white ribbon from Dec. 2 to 6.
If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know when you are available from 11 AM to 2 PM from Monday (Dec. 2) to Thursday (Dec. 5). Even if you can only be present for an hour that would be welcomed.
Send your availabilities to Kayla Smith (ksmith@dawsoncollege.qc.ca) to volunteer!
Additionally, we hope to see you on Monday in the Co-lab for an interesting discussion.
