Nursing Profession Being Undervalued: Fiona Hanley
Fiona Hanley, Nursing Program Coordinator, has eloquently but firmly called out the devaluation of the nursing profession and its detrimental effect on the healthcare system. Her letter to the editor published on February 13 in Le Devoir (in French) calls upon the Ministry of Health to enter into a dialogue with nurses practicing in every sector, educators, researchers, the Ministry of Education, unions and the Order of Nurses, before any further damage is done. She cites the power struggles, dominant patriarchal ideology and the wide divide between financial support and morale-building among doctors and nurses from the beginning of their careers as essentially obliterating the pivotal role of nurses in the healthcare system.
