Description
Living out:
Both outrageously funny and ultimately tragic, LIVING OUT tells the story of a Salvadoran nanny (Ana) and the Anglo lawyer (Nancy) she works for. Set in Los Angeles, the play raises provocative questions about race, class, gender, and the raising of children. Through Ana, an illegal immigrant, we understand what it means to leave a child in another country to come to America. Through Nancy, we understand the pressure on modern women to "do it all". The title of the play refers to the living situation of a nanny: Those who live in their employer's household "live in," while those who return to their own homes after work "live out." Written in 2003, this play is (unfortunately) more relevant than ever.
