Course Description: The purpose of this course is to give the student the essentials of anatomy and physiology of all human body systems as they pertain to Radiation Oncology. The structure and function of cells are discussed with an emphasis on the cell cycle and cell division (mitosis and meiosis). All human anatomical systems are described concerning location, surface landmarks, and surrounding structures. The physiology of all systems is described with particular attention given to the skeletal, nervous, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. | |||||||||

Course Description: This course is the first of two courses intended to allow the student to gain an understanding of anatomy, physiology, histology, etiology, epidemiology, pathology, and staging related to the cancer patient. The students will study the spread of disease, role of the lymphatic system, characteristics of normal and malignant cells, and clinical history and presentation. The student will also learn about the safety and the radiobiological effects on tissue including the principles of fractionation. Finally, the students will learn of the various treatment modalities, the prescription and basic principles of pharmacology. | |||||||||

Course Description: This Applied Dosimetry course deals with radiation dosimetry and concentrates on beam measurement techniques, quality assurance issues in treatment planning, as well as the special techniques used in treatment planning and delivery. The basic quantities and units used in dosimetry are discussed in detail and their application in the calculation of clinical dose distributions is explained. The course starts with a discussion of single photon beams and progresses through dose distributions obtained with multiple photon beams to electron beams and dosimetry in brachytherapy. Students will produce and evaluate clinical treatment plans. | |||||||||
