Law, Society & Justice: Trip to Ottawa Supreme Court
February 16th, 2017The Law, Society & Justice trip to Ottawa allows students to experience the Supreme Court of Canada as well as question period at Parliament. Students will tour the Supreme Court, observe an actual Supreme Court hearing, and participate in a mock trial organized and guided by the Supreme Court support staff. In addition, the students will tour Parliament, be present at Question Period, and meet with members of Parliament. After these activities, the students will have a Profile supper together in Ottawa.
Project Update
Fifty-two students and teachers from the Law, Society and Justice Profile travelled to Parliament in Ottawa. They met with a number of Members of Parliament:

- Peter Shiefke (Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil—Soulanges, Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Trudeau for Youth Affairs, AND Dawson College alumni),
- Elizabeth May (Member of Parliament for Saanich—Gulf Islands and leader of the Green Party of Canada)
- Michael Chong (Member of Parliament for Wellington—Halton Hills and candidate for leader of the Conservative Party of Canada)
- Thomas Mulcaire (Member of Parliament for Outremont and interim leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada)
The students listened to their elected representatives discuss politics, their parties and Parliament, asked questions, and then feasted on coffee, fruit and cookies provide by Thomas Mulcaire, who also took them to the Parliament cafeteria to buy lunch.
In the afternoon, the students took in Question Period where, among others, questions were asked of the Minister of Canadian Heritage Mélany Jolie about Islamophobia with some intensity.
