Open Studio Life Drawing 2016-17
Fall 2016 – Winter 2017The Open Studio Life Drawing at Dawson College, are weekly drawing sessions where students can avail themselves after class time to refine their handling of drawing materials, hone their observational skills, and enhance their drawing techniques as they observe from the human figure.
Sessions will be offered September 7, 2016 to May 10, 2017 (12x Fall Session + 12x Winter Session).
These sessions are open to our Illustration students and also to any student in the visual arts disciplines and for faculty as well. In particular, students from Illustration (New Program), Illustration & Design, Fine Arts (now Visual Arts), and 3D Animation have over the years also availed themselves of this opportunity. Alumni are also welcome.Photo credit Joey Hebert
Project Update
These weekly drawing sessions were offered after school one day per week and were highly recommended by faculty, especially since there was not sufficient time in the curriculum to offer these during the day. These drawing sessions helped the weaker students with extra practice time on a regular basis. Stronger and more advanced students also benefited by this practice time since it permitted them to gain confidence and speed but also to increased their competency in anatomy, composition, perspective, etc. Students were free to work with pencil and paper, charcoal or even digitally on their Wacom tablets and laptops. The live model sessions also allowed for students to use this time to draw and complete assignments which require this type of subject, or simply to add to their sketchbook assignments, which is a requirement for several of their classes.
Joey Hebert (Fall 2016) and Denis Mocanu (Winter 2017), both third year Illustration & Design student, volunteered to be responsible for this event and ensured that they also attended personally and supervised the drawing sessions. They were also responsible to select and organize the list of models, making sure that they were scheduled ahead of time, attended as scheduled, as well as made themcomfortable with the appropriate studio equipment. The sessions began in late September scheduled on Wednesdays in the fall and on Mondays in the winter till early-May 2017. In all 21 sessions were scheduled for 3 hours.
During each semester, the number of students in attendance varied, but there was always a healthy participation. The majority of students are from the Illustration & Design program, but several consistently attended from the Fine Arts (now called Visual Arts) and the 3D Animation & CGI programs. Several alumni also made it a point of returning to Dawson to be part of this drawing studio.
