Safer Spaces
February 9th - 16th, 2018This project is a multidisciplinary way of getting the community involved in addressing issues of safety for all who attend the school. As a fairly new concept, contemplating microagressions through assignments will hopefully start a dialogue about the many ways in which our community can be inclusive and possibly draw attention to issues we did not realize existed. Students will present their work and will be help with the promotion and set up of the exhibit in the 5C hallway.
Project Update
Phase 1 of Safer Spaces went well, and the posters that students created were presented in the library hallway and gained a lot of attention. Varied approaches to draw attention to micro-aggressions were explored visually and with personal perspective. Many projects focused on ways in which many might interpret race, class, and gender and in some cases point to some solutions implicitly. 3 classes were involved in this project and about 40 poster submissions were exhibited. As a conversation starter, this worked very well. It would seem that many who were involved, provided very insightful reasons and personal connection to the work they made.
